Detailed Instructions — Do These in Order

Step 1 — Save Everything

  • Keep every letter and the envelope it came in.
  • Take screenshots of texts and voicemails; write down the date and time of each contact.
  • Start a simple log: Date | Who | What they said | How you got it (mail/text/call) | Rule they broke (if any).

Step 2 — Ask for Validation (within 30 days of the first letter)

  • Use the Debt Validation Request template below.
  • Mail it by Certified Mail and keep the receipt.
  • After you ask for validation, the collector should pause collection until they validate.

Step 3 — Watch for Rule Breaks

  • Do they keep contacting you after you requested validation or told them to stop?
  • Do they threaten you or lie?
  • Do they call very early/late or call you at work after you said not to?
  • Did they talk to someone else about your debt?

Step 4 — Report It

  • Submit a complaint to the CFPB (they’ll route it to the company and require a response).
    Open CFPB Complaint
  • Also notify your State Attorney General if needed.
    Find State AG

Step 5 — Choose Your Path

  • Negotiate from strength (ask them to fix mistakes and make it right).
  • Self-file a case if you believe rules were broken (many people do this on their own).
  • Or hire a consumer-rights lawyer (often no upfront fee; fee-shift can apply if you win).
Timing tip: There are deadlines (for example, 30 days for validation requests and separate limits for filing a case). Save your proof and act promptly.

What You’ll Learn

  • How timing changes what appears on your credit reports
  • Exactly how to mail, track, and store your evidence
  • What “validation” means and what to look for in the reply
  • When and how to escalate using official portals

Your Quick Decision Map

  • If they follow the rules → consider a payment plan or negotiation.
  • If they break rules and you have proof → file complaints and consider legal action.
